Plaid incurred unexpected downtime in 2022. A root cause analysis determined that databases amounted to 50% of the problem. However, despite some success, the company could not eliminate downtime in Amazon Aurora MySQL. Even worse, AWS announced a forced upgrade from MySQL 5.7 to 8.0. These two factors became the catalyst for TiDB adoption.

In this keynote recording from HTAP Summit 2024, Zander Hill, Experienced Database Reliability Engineer at Plaid, recounts the company’s journey for a team of six engineers migrating 41 services from Amazon Aurora MySQL to TiDB in a year. He shares Plaid’s migration methodology, efficiency optimizations, and lessons learned. By examining a single service’s journey, he also identifies successful strategies and areas for improvement, providing attendees with insights for accelerated TiDB adoption within their own organization.
