2022 has come to a close, and it’s time to reflect on the many accomplishments and milestones PingCAP has had over the past 12 months. From new product releases and partnerships, to industry recognition and company growth, PingCAP has had a busy and successful year.
A Strong Performer — recognition from Forrester Research
In December 2022, PingCAP was named a “Strong Performer” in The Forrester Wave™: Translytical Data Platforms, Q4 2022 report by Forrester Research, Inc., a leading independent research and advisory firm.
The report’s findings were based on a 26-criteria evaluation of the 15 vendors that Forrester identified as the most significant translytical data platform providers. PingCAP received the highest possible score (5.0) in customer deployment criterion. As the report notes, “PingCAP is a good fit for customers that need a MySQL-compatible translytical platform that delivers good performance for intense transactional applications.”

Expanding customer trust worldwide
In 2022, more leading enterprise companies and innovative startups across the globe replaced their legacy systems with TiDB, a more agile and simplified Hybrid Transactional and Analytical Processing(HTAP) database system. We now have more than 3,000 companies around the world using TiDB.
In North America and Europe, TiDB has been adopted by both startups and leading enterprise companies such as Pinterest, Databricks, Bolt, Block, Niantic, and Catalyst. In India, TiDB is a popular choice in the e-commerce and logistics industry. Adopters include Flipkart, India’s largest e-commerce company, and a leading logistics company. In Japan, TiDB is the most trusted database in the gaming and fintech industries, with top gaming companies such as CAPCOM, Cygames, and a fintech leader choosing TiDB to support their rapid business growth. In Singapore, TiDB is the most popular database for the rising Web3 industry, with NFTScan, KNN3, and many other Web3 pioneers using TiDB to support their massive business growth and customer success. Similar stories also happened in many other companies in other regions and countries.
In addition to recognition by big names, we also received thumbs-up by end users. In June 2022, PingCAP was recognized by customers as a “Strong Performer” in the 2022 Gartner® Peer Insights™ Voice of the Customer in Cloud Database Management Systems report. Our customers rated us 4.7 out of 5, and 94% of them said they would recommend us to others.
PingCAP recognized by customers as a Strong Performer
Since we founded PingCAP seven years ago, TiDB has been adopted by more than 3,000 large and medium-sized companies worldwide. Many of these users have also contributed to our open source community. This unbelievable achievement makes us believe even more that building a widely-used database requires sustained investments over a period of at least a decade. We are grateful for the support and contributions of everyone who loves TiDB and has helped us to reach where we are today.
For detailed TiDB case studies, see our customer stories or listen to talks given by our customers at the Virtual HTAP Summit.
TiDB iterations with improved enterprise-grade capability
In 2022, our team continued to innovate on our product offerings, evolving from TiDB 5.3 to TiDB 6.5 and adding more than 200 improvements and new features. We not only greatly improved TiDB’s performance, but exceeded the increasing expectations of our customers and community users. For example, TiDB’s extreme load capacity of HTAP capability under hybrid read and write loading pressure has been increased by more than 100%; the latency in mission-critical transactions of internet companies is now four times lower.
TiDB 6.0 is the sixth Development Milestone Release (DMR) and significantly enhances TiDB’s manageability as an enterprise product. It also incorporates many of the essential features required for a cloud-native database. TiDB 6.1 marks our first Long Term Support (LTS) TiDB version, taking into account both the rapidly changing market demands and the stability requirements from enterprise users. The recently released TiDB 6.5 is another LTS version of TiDB, which is another leap in performance, stability, and usability.

Accelerated evolution of TiDB Cloud for flexible needs
TiDB Cloud is a fully-managed service for TiDB that runs on the cloud. In 2022, it grew and evolved significantly.
In May, we announced the general availability of TiDB Cloud, making it easier, more reliable, and more flexible to use. We also created strong partnerships with global public cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud Platform (GCP), and launched TiDB Cloud on their marketplaces. This made it much easier for global users to access TiDB Cloud. In addition, to provide our users with affordable services, we announced TiDB Cloud Serverless Tier, which enables developers to cost-effectively deploy their infrastructure at scale without managing a server infrastructure.
Better developer experience and strengthened ecosystem partnership
At PingCAP, improving the developer experience has always been a top priority. In 2022, we published the Application Development Guide, which helps application developers to easily grasp the use cases and sample application code, and quickly get started building applications on top of TiDB.
We also understand the importance of the ecosystem in the developer experience. In 2022, TiDB added object-relational mapping (ORM) support for major programming languages such as Go, Java, Ruby, Python, and PHP. To reduce development barriers, we integrated with more popular developer tools such as Vercel, Hashicorp, and ProxySQL. Overall, it has never been easier to develop applications on top of TiDB.
OSS Insight for real-time GitHub insights
Last year, we also introduced OSS Insight, an open source insight tool for GitHub. It’s both fun and powerful, allowing users to analyze any repository or developer on GitHub, or compare any two repositories for interesting insights.
The OSS Insight homepage
After its debut, OSS Insight quickly caught the attention of both developers and enterprises. Articles talking about OSS Insight and the GitHub insight report quickly hit the front page of Hacker News, a popular developer news site. The insights OSS Insight generated were frequently used by developers or project owners as evidence of success on GitHub or for decision making. In fact, if you search for the keyword “OSS Insight,” you can see just how widely it is used.
At the end of 2022, ChatGPT, a powerful AI tool, went viral. OSS Insight quickly integrated itself with ChatGPT, allowing users to easily create queries in natural language. This enabled more users who aren’t familiar with SQL to get valuable insights too. A lot more interesting features are on the way. Stay tuned.
Amplified tech leadership and influence
We believe that sharing helps to make the world a better place, and we stayed true to this belief in 2022.
We successfully hosted “The Rise of HTAP,” the very first conference on HTAP technology in Silicon Valley. Industry and technology leaders in the database and analytics industries, including Databricks, AWS, Forrester, Pinterest, Block, Menlo Ventures, StarTree, Catalyst, Niantic, and Flipkart shared their ideas and experiences with HTAP, and how it accommodates the needs of both transactional and analytical processing.
We also held more than 20 regular meetups both online and offline, reaching tens of thousands of attendees worldwide. These meetups covered a wide range of topics including engineering deep dives, product tutorials, and tech trends. We also jointly hosted talks with our customers such as Bolt, Databricks, and Pinterest, and our partners such as AWS and the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
For information about future meetups, follow us on Twitter, LinkedIn, or Youtube.
Academic cooperation and achievement
To stay successful, a company must continuously cultivate talent. At PingCAP, we aim to cultivate a pool of professionals who are aligned with the pace of technological advancement in the database industry. In partnership with top universities worldwide, such as the University of Wisconsin–Madison, we obtained 16 patents and published five top conference papers. We also trained a total of 19,136 professionals in the field of distributed databases, and upgraded our database operation and management personnel certification system. As of the end of 2022, we have issued more than 4,300 TiDB personnel certifications globally.
Looking to the future
Together, our team accomplished a lot in 2022. We made many product innovations, offered better user and developer experiences, received recognition from various stakeholders, grew our user base significantly, and expanded our global presence with a growing team around the world.
We are grateful for the hard work and dedication of our team, as well as the support of our community. We are looking forward to continuing this momentum in the coming year.
